Director Hayato Date deftly juggles interlocking story lines, flashbacks, action sequences, and broad comedy as the hit adventure-fantasy Naruto Shippuden continues. Gaara, the leader of the Village Hidden in the Sand, battles Deidara, who fights with enchanted paper and clay. Their spectacular duel reveals how completely Naruto transformed an icy assassin into an admirable leader: Gaara allows himself to be captured to protect the people of his village. But help is on the way: Naruto and Sakura have joined their former teacher, Kakashi-sensei, to form a new ninja team in the allied Hidden Leaf Village. Naruto Shippuden boasts more elaborate computer-animated effects than Naruto, enabling Date to pump up the action when Gaara fights with clouds of magical sand and when Sand Village lieutenant Kankura duels the scorpionlike Sasori using elaborate puppets. But amid the crises, there's still time for Naruto to slurp down ramen and act like the knucklehead audiences know and love. While Naruto Shippuden clearly draws a lot of viewers from the millions of Naruto fans, it's exciting and entertaining enough to win viewers who don't know the original series.
